PART 1.
Online dating nets ex-Harvard man a fortune!

At first sight there appears to be nothing special about Jason Kilkenny. He comes across as simply a rather shy, modest man in his mid-thirties. He talks nervously for a while at the start of our interview, looking left and right as if wanting to escape. But then he calms down a little, and his lively, colorful character starts to shine through, like the New York sun bursting through the thick blanket of grey morning cloud above us. By the end, he is relaxed, laughing and looking a lot more confident. The reason I'm here in the luxurious Palace Hotel on Madison Avenue is that Jason, despite his average looks, is actually a rather special guy. Two months ago he sold his successful online dating company, Dates4U.com, to a larger rival for a cool $3 million.

As we sit opposite one another in the comfy armchairs of the hotel's trendy breakfast lounge, Jason gradually recalls how he made his fortune. After leaving Harvard with a Masters in mathematics, he started work for a software company but soon grew bored and left to set up his own company. Using his software engineering talents, he constructed a website that allowed people to not only search for their perfect partner, and chat with them directly online, but also offered exciting new features ... he organized local events, such as dancing competitions and karaoke nights, for people to meet up together and have fun in a safe, controlled environment. His special 'speed dating dinners', where participants eat each course with a different person, became a huge hit. Word soon spread and the site attracted a huge membership. This inspiring young man had created a winning formula that meant demand was high while fortunately expenses remained minimal. Jason didn't need to rent office space; he worked from home. He didn't need to employ many staff - just a few casual workers to help with administration. Things were looking good, and when advertisers got interested the big money started rolling in. "The subscription fees were pretty low, but that was okay because it's the ads where the real money is," he points out. Jason even started a holiday company, taking single people off to sunny locations around the U.S. and beyond. "Last year, as well as 15 city trips inside the U.S., we ran three trips to Europe, and took a group of 60 to Cuba for two weeks of salsa classes!" he adds.

It all sounded a little too perfect to me, so I dug deeper trying to find out about all the failures along the way ... you know, the endless disappointments, technical hitches and frustrating troubles that all new inspiring companies are supposed to overcome on the road to success ... but there weren't any. It seemed that Jason's route to fame and fortune really was just a neat idea, well thought through and cleverly managed. I started to become jealous. How come this guy could do it so effortlessly? He just seemed like an ordinary guy, dare I say it - even a little boring, to me. But gradually as we chatted I realized. Yes, he has had to work hard. Sure, he has been lucky because at the time there wasn't much competition around. But the main reason for his success is Jason himself. It is his energy, enthusiasm and determination that made the whole project such a great success. He has managed this amazing achievement because of who he is. He never stopped trying, never even looked back, until he reached his goal - and walked away with $3 million!

PART 2.

An online success story- Amazon.com.

We have all heard of the online retailer Amazon.com, and the chances are that many of us have actually visited the site and even bought something from it. Today, Amazon.com is a household name, but do you know the story behind this company's rise to success? How did a business that began in 1994 in a garage, turn into the world's top online retailer? It is by far the largest in the U.S., with websites all around the world that are visited by hundreds of millions of people every month. Read on, and discover how this extraordinary feat came about.

Amazon.com was founded by a man called Jeff Bezos in 1994, from the garage of his home in Washington. It began as a company that simply sold books via the Internet. He chose the name 'Amazon' after the world's biggest river. At first, it wasn't especially successful because many people felt the website was unattractive. At a time when a lot of new dot.com businesses were expanding rapidly, Amazon seemed to be progressing rather slowly. However, the website worked and the service it offered gained steady support. Bezos was soon joined by other investors who believed in the concept. They helped to redesign the site to be more user-friendly, and it wasn't long before people from all over the U.S. were buying books from Amazon.com. A new feature which allowed people to post reviews of the books they had purchased made the site a lot more interactive, and increased its popularity considerably by creating an online community. Then, when the company expanded its range to include movies and music CDs, things really took off. As the company grew, more items followed ... software, toys, home improvement products, electronics and video games. In 1999, less than five years after it started, Amazon.com had achieved sales of over $1 billion. Bezos was named 'Person of the Year' by Time Magazine, who also called him the 'king of commerce'.

However, despite achieving massive sales, Amazon.com found making a profit more difficult and reported huge losses the following year. The stock price dived, and, along with other companies that had risen quickly, it looked like Amazon.com might dramatically collapse. Many feared that the company would not be able to survive, blaming it for expanding too rapidly and diversifying too much. Some even called the company 'Amazon.bomb'. The future looked very bleak. However, it was at this crucial point that Bezos came up with an innovative strategy that would save the company. First, he restructured the organization, shedding around 1300 jobs (15% of Amazon's workforce) in January 2001, and telling managers to stop selling unprofitable products. He also reorganized the distribution system to make it more streamlined and efficient. Thirdly, and perhaps most importantly, he managed to convince other companies to sell their products through Amazon.com. While this third-party business provided a small additional income, the main advantage was that it greatly expanded the range of products the company offered. Now Amazon.com could sell clothes, food, home goods, sporting equipment, baby products, just about everything you could think of. The company effectively became an online shopping portal, and exactly a year after the disastrous job cuts it reported its first profit. Since then, the company has gone from strength to strength. It has expanded the services it offers and even started to develop and sell its own range of goods. It is today the undisputed champion of Internet commerce. The range offered is so vast that you can buy almost anything, from TVs to baseballs, car accessories, exercise equipment, or even a $150,000 diamond bracelet!
